Taken from the Wily Bo Walker solo album ‘Moon Over Indigo’, 'Walking with the Devil' takes us on a trip way down to the bayou for this Caribbean infused voodoo blues.
Over the percolating beats of Eran Asias spiced with the howling slide guitar from Graham Hine over Tom Welch's undulating bass line, Wily Bo recounts a tale of how the devil stole his lady. Or is he the devil himself in this tale - food for thought!
Concise storytelling from Wily Bo Walker continues a thread that works across a few of his albums…

Said of this song:
"'Walking With The Devil' is a dark funky, jazzy blues number, with huge voodoo atmosphere. Graham Hine starts the song with a nice slide intro. A lurid story of the devil who went walking with his wife shows Wily masterfully weave the tale with his characteristic lived in and smoky, raspy voice." - Walter Vanheuckelom, Blueszine
“Wily Bo Walker explores a melange of moods, feels, narratives and grooves, no more so than on the opening ‘Walking With The Devil’, which features the triumvirate of Wily, the devil and Graham Hine’s weeping slide playing which threads its way through the heart of the track." - Pete Feenstra, Get Ready to Rock
"The opener here is ‘Walking With The Devil’ and after a slow, sustained guitar line he moves into a New Orleans shuffle – and then the vocals come in: smoky, dark (I mean Nick Cave dark) and captivating. You just have to listen and be mesmerised by his singing and that awesome guitar line." - Andy Snipper, Music News
lyrics
I’VE BEEN WALKING WITH THE DEVIL
THE DEVIL BY MY SIDE
WALKING WITH THE DEVIL
THE DEVIL BY MY SIDE
THAT DEVIL TOOK MY WOMAN
ON A MIDNIGHT RIDE…
THE DEVIL TOOK MY BABY
THE DEVIL TOOK MY KNIFE
THE DEVIL TOOK MY WOMAN
AND TWISTED
DEEP INSIDE
I HEARD MY BABY SCREAMING
SHE LOOKED ME IN THE EYE
MY BABY SHE WAS SCREAMING
SHE LOOKED ME IN THE EYE
DON'T YOU LOVE ME BABY
DON'T YOU LOVE ME CHILD…
AND SHE SAID…
ALL OF THE WORDS THAT SHE SAID
THE DEVIL TOOK MY BABY
AND A FEVER STARTED BURNING IN MY HEAD…
I’VE BEEN WALKING WITH THE DEVIL
THE DEVIL BY MY SIDE
THE DEVIL TOOK MY WOMAN
AND I SWEAR I LOST MY MIND
YEAH…
I’VE BEEN WALKING WITH THE DEVIL
TALKING WITH THE DEVIL
ALL NIGHT LONG
ALL NIGHT LONG…

I've purchased a fair few HDC albums now (and listened to the rest). Difficult to truly pick a stand out as all excellent, raw blues - but if pushed this one is my favourite. The song writing is first class throughout. It's maybe even slightly lighter in feel than some of the others, but this is still dirty af;) knightd68
