about

Wily Bo Walker originally penned the lyrics to this song when living in Paris for a while, a long, long time ago! The actual song came together whilst working on an album with E D Brayshaw who also plays on this track.

A true story from Wily Bo's diary in a veiled reference to Jean Paul Sartre's existential novel 'La Nausée'!

Also includes direct nod to his love of Billie Holiday as well - plus, of course, he covers her song 'You Don't Know What Love Is' on his compilation album 'Wily Bo Walker & the Danny Flam Big Band'

Said of this track:

"…part Bond theme and part good time Saturday night song!" Ben Macnair - Blues Matters

"Walker’s growl & Karena’s scatting prompts ideal foils for each other as horns blaze and guitars chime…" David Innes - Blues and More Again

"Superb track from a superb album!" Jim McNeill - The Blues Club - Switch Dunmow

lyrics

MIDNIGHT GAMES THAT’S THE WAY IT GOES
RENDEZ-VOUS DES CHEMINOTS
ANTOINE TURNS HE TAP MY SHOULDER AND SIGHS
SAYS SHE’S WALKING DOWN THE STREET
IN SOME CRAZY JIVE
I DRANK A COLD, SOUR COFFEE WROTE YOU OFF AS A LOSS
I CAN’T BELIEVE THE LIES
HOW YOU DOUBLE-CROSSED ME
YOU DREW THE HEAT
NOW HONEY, I MASTERED COOL
ONE STEP AHEAD IN THIS CITY OF FOOLS

I WROTE HER OFF BACK IN SEVENTY-THREE
HEARD THAT SHE DIED THAT WAY
IN SOME CRIME I NEVER SEE
PUT A COIN IN THAT JUKEBOX
LET THAT RECORD SPIN
IT DRIVE ME CRAZY JUST TO HEAR HER SING
AND THE SOUND OF MISS HOLIDAY’S VOICE IN MY HEAD
“ONE OF THESE DAYS YOU’RE GONNA MISS ME – I’M DEAD”
CALL ME SOLO
YOU CAN CALL ME ALONE
WHY DON’T YOU CALL ME TOMORROW ON THE TELEPHONE

LOVER BEWARE YOU KNOW HOW LOVE IS BLIND
YOU LIE TO YOURSELF
JUST TO KEEP IT KIND
THIS EMPTY SPACE AMID THESE FLASHING SIGNS
SAYS THAT WE’LL MAYBE MEET AGAIN
BUT HONEY NOT THIS TIME…
I DRANK A COLD, SOUR COFFEE WROTE YOU OFF AS A LOSS
I CAN’T BELIEVE THE LIES
HOW YOU DOUBLE-CROSSED ME
YOU DREW THE HEAT
HONEY, I MASTERED COOL
ONE STEP AHEAD IN THIS CITY OF FOOLS

MIDNIGHT GAMES THAT’S THE WAY IT GOES
A RENDEZ-VOUS DOWN AT DES CHEMINOTS
ANTOINE TURN
HE SHRUG HIS SHOULDER AND SIGH
I CLOSE THE DOOR AND TURN MY COLLAR
TO THE COLD MOONLIGHT
AND THE SOUND OF MISS HOLIDAY’S VOICE IN MY HEAD
“ONE OF THESE DAYS YOU’RE GONNA MISS ME – I’M DEAD”
CALL ME SOLO
YOU CAN CALL ME ALONE
WHY DON’T YOU CALL ME TOMORROW ON THAT TELEPHONE
