Motel Blues (feat. E D Brayshaw)

from The Wily Bo Walker Story Vol I by Wily Bo Walker

/

about

In a recent interview Wily Bo Walker was asked about the inclusion of this particular song, a cover version of Loudon Wainwright III' 'Motel Blues' on the album.

He says, "I have grown up with this track since I first heard it on the New Age of Atlantic Sampler in the 70's. I have played it since and always wanted to lay down a version that would keep the emotion but give it a new personal edge. Having played gigs and toured all my life this song just about sums it all up in a way I didn't need to write about myself. It also sits right in the overall storyline across the Stone COld Beautiful albums"

Said of this track:

"Loudon Wainwright III’s 'Motel Blues' brings some country acoustic blues into the mix with a stylish delivery suiting Wily’s vocals" Liz Aiken - Blues Doodles

"Very evocative!" Jason Elliott - Blues and Soul Show

"A superb version of Loudon Wainwright III’s ‘Motel Blues’, giving it all the seediness and desperation it deserves but somehow keeping the sense of pleading passion it describes" Andy Snipper - Music News

lyrics

IN THIS TOWN TELEVISION SHUTS OFF AT TWO
WHAT CAN A LONELY ROCK’N’ROLLER DO
A BED SO BIG THE SHEETS ARE CLEAN
YOUR GIRLFRIEND SAID YOU WERE JAMES DEAN
A STYROFOAM ICE BUCKET FULL OF ICE
COME UP TO MY MOTEL ROOM AND
TREAT ME NICE

I DON’T WANT TO MAKE NO LATE NIGHT NEW YORK CALLS
I DON’T WANT TO STARE AT THESE UGLY GRASSMAT WALLS
CHRONOLOGICALLY I KNOW YOU’RE YOUNG
COS WHEN YOU KISSED ME IN THE CLUB YOU BIT MY TONGUE
I’LL WRITE A SONG FOR YOU
AND PUT IT ON MY NEXT LP
COME UP TO MY MOTEL ROOM AND
SLEEP WITH ME

THERE’S A BIBLE IN THE DRAWER DON’T BE AFRAID
I’LL PUT UP A SIGN TO WARN THE CLEAN UP MAID
THERE’S LOTS OF SOAP AND LOTS OF TOWELS
NEVER MIND THOSE DESK CLERK SCOWLS
I’LL BUY YOU BREAKFAST AND
THEY’LL THINK YOU’RE MY WIFE
COME UP TO MY MOTEL ROOM AND
SAVE MY LIFE
